The counter shown below displays the number of Israeli military personnel refusing to serve in the Occupied Territories. I applaud their integrity and their strength of character. To me they are heroes of peace and humanity.

No doubt, no doubt. On the other hand, try getting an e-zine like Truthout started in China and aimed at Chinese government and see what happens.
We always demonise our enemies. Why, in WWII the Brits and the Yanks called the Germans 'Gerry's'. :-)

But I thought the context of the article was less about how we demonise our enemies and more about how we seek to excuse the attrocities _we_ commit by pointing out that our victims were "the bad guys".
Jerries, actually, but I couldn't resist the shift. Dunno where the apostrophe came from, but.
And, yes, Chomsky was on about excusing our own atrocities; my point was rather that if these aren't people but demons, then it's not an atrocity. We demonise first, then whatever we do next is acceptable because it is being done to demons, not people.
Point taken about demonisation.
So, "bad guys" is demonisation used by bad guys pretending they're the good guys?
Yepsters, that's it. Also used by us to refer to those guys who we liked last week but they have now, we discover, done the dirty on us.
Yeh, and of course, since they're the "bad guys", it's OK to commit atrocities against them, yeah?
Don't you just love how civilised we've become?
Clearly, we're superior...
